cone question

Around 1980 bought a Marshall slant cab circa '73 loaded with T1221 25 watt greybacks.
AFAIK that era sport mostly 102/3 cones but mine have 1777 handwritten on the cones, anyone know if is this conclusive of a recone or are there other things to look for ?
I later blew one up New England Speaker reconed it with a 444.

73 through 74 was the transition years. I have seen gray back speakers with 1777 and 444 cones. I think they used both Pulsonic and Rola cones for quite quite a while.

Thanks for the info Alex. The remaining three cones look original but I wasn't 100% sure , most 1777 in the cab database & elsewhere seem to occur in the mid seventies.
I had seen a comment somewhere maybe Plexi Palace that some greys had no cone codes whatsoever.
btw this cab is on the database listed as model 1960 circa 1973 speakers are G12M T1221 25 watter grey KF4, I left the cones blank as I wasn’t sure of the authenticity but it wouldn’t hurt to add.

After reading this its possible I have original unstamped pulsonic cones that have 1777 hand written on them..Also possible they're RIC cones.

It goes it great detail on the appearance of the various cones, after closer examination of my 1973 greyback I would say they are likely RIC cones. Though not easy to determine from my crappy pictures you can see the color is somewhat different but more obvious is that the ribs are very different...

ribs maybe look a bit more distinct in the top pic (to my *very* untrained eye--I don't have much of a clue about speakers ). The article mentions a stamp, so...is there one present?

Yep the Pulsonic cones have more pronounced ribs compared to RIC and Kurt Muller cones. Are you referring to the circular stamp on the frame next to the T1221 code? If so then yes those are there and visible in the pictures.

David, in the "'RIC' stamped cones" segment of the article, there are a couple of pictures, and two of them show a stamp on the backsides of the cones which include "RIC" in the code (pics below) :

Sorry I misunderstood, the cone number 1777 is hand written on my greybacks which according to the article could happen from late 1973 to late 1975..

so the suspect grey back only has the handwritten "1777" and no "RIC..." stamp, I take it?

That is correct, all four have uh had that 1777 hand written as the one pictured , I blew one up some years ago and now it sports a 444 cone...
