Just want to let those who use Cliff S4 jacks know there are two companies named Cliff who are selling jacks :!:
One is based in the UK and the other in the US so be careful which you buy

hey David. I was curious when I saw some (looking for something else), a couple of all-plastic Cliff I bought not that long ago, and they had "UK" on them.

Yeah. (I took another look) and it says, "CLIFF UK 4". Wonder if the number indicates type or something (these are the same kind of switching jacks as in late JMP/JCM800 with gold plated contacts).

not sure what the number mean, I have some used jacks that are probably 14 years old numbered 2-8, seems random.

that answers a lot eh

Maybe it's the machine number in case of a bad batch.

that sounds logical. So they can trace things back. Would there be that many ("8" was given above), or wonder if it's the generation of machine in service or something.

My 2 cents...and I'm closer to this than I'll get into.

REAL Cliff UK jacks, will say Cliff UK on the bottom.

the small #'s are the number of the injection mold.
I've been to the old factory before it closed down (Cliff Plastics) and whatched the jacks being made.

The jack that just says 'CLIFF' is made in China. The contacts are Phospher bronze with tin plating, whereas the UK Jack has nickel silver contact, with their Niag plating being optional. (really only makes a diff in the FX loop.) These are the jacks Sold to Marshall since the beginning, and STILL being sold to Marshall.

Cliff UK and Cliff USA are having a lawsuit/disagreement over naming rights, patent info, etc.
But the bottom line is, The REAL Cliff Jacks are STILL made in UK, in Redhill Surrey. The ones 'CliffUSA' sells, are NOT UK Made, and not the traditional Cliff jacks.

I've been busy so haven't had time to post how I discovered the story of the two Cliff companies. ! It’s now forgone conclusion what the deal is and big thanks to Big Mike for filling in the details ,of most interest IMO is the difference in materials used.

The condensed version LOL

Last month I had ordered Cliff jacks advertised Made in England from AES and expected to received as I have many times in the past Cliff Made in England labeled Cliff UK just like the ones pictured on the left which is from my old stock. I received the jacks on the right !!When I asked AES about the change they simply said that Cliff jacks are now make in China.

Not satisfied with this answer or the product I returned the item and suggested that AES should change their advert which they did..
Then I did a search and found Cliff UK and Cliff USA both offering S4 jacks so I emailed them to get to the bottom of this. Bruce from Cliff UK responded, Cliff USA did not.

In a nutshell Cliff USA was a distributor for the Cliff UK and at some point started having similar jacks made in China which would be the 3 Cliff stamped version in my picture, the rest of the details are posted at TGP and the Les Paul forum..

BTW I had heard of Cliff look alike from a post at the JTM45 Group some years ago so always avoided them ,message 2561 for those interested.
