David,
Hope you got the other "head" info, just for possible future use.
(And, good news: the other info is coming through and I should have it to forward to you in a few days.)

For those reading along:
I found some pretty useful/interesting stuff a couple years ago while searching for
alternatives to buying EP heads on line (dreaded ebay).
Since EP's are definitely finite in number (r.i.p., Mike Battle), then spare things like the
recording/playback heads can be one rather unique source of troubles on a problematic unit.
Anyway...
Here's a significant link to some experts in magnetic things and the services they offer.
It's also a potentially Great Resource for those of you who might happen to have an analog tape recorder !

http://www.jrfmagnetics.com/
There's some interesting tech reading within their site too....

See ya!

Hi Ray,

Good resource to have, wonder how much to have the heads re lapped ? Now I need to find an amber lens bezel for mine, seems like a lot of them are missing that. :|
Just going through Regis's EP page and noticed he doesn't have a source for the motor mounts so that could be another item of interest? Also somewhere packed away I have Vintage Guitar issue with an article on Echoplex maintenance, see if I can locate.

Hey David,
I'll dig through some old email to see if I can find the response I received from JRF Magnetics.
The prices will be dated info, however....but at least we are onto them as a source.
I DO have a couple NOS heads here, fyi.
As for the "other info", it came through so keep an eye on your mailbox towards the end of the week.
It's not a lot, but we're just getting started!
As for the bezel and other EP parts I will keep my eyes peeled and also get out a bit to start digging.
Have a good one.

Forgot to mention that I also have the same EP article(s) from Vintage Guitar.
If I remember correctly, it was a 4-part series. Hopefully they didn't get pitched

Did a little digging to find out if the VG articles might be online somewhere....
and...
2 of the 4-part series are there!
Here you go!
Part I:
http://www.vintageguitarmagazine.com/features/brands/details.asp?AID=1156
and
Part IV:
http://www.vintageguitar.com/features/brands/details.asp?AID=1170

These 2 links from the VG site are the first and last parts of a 4 part series.
The second link has a short summary about each segment of the series, so hopefully I am able to dig up
the actual magazines from '98, with the EP articles from my stack of old VG's down in the basement!

Ray,

Roots of Echo Part IV Echoplex is the one which contains maintaining your Echoplex as a sidebar however I don't see it online :(

Found it ! can't believe I didn't dump it after so many moves, its in the October 1998 VG with Robert Cray on the front (pg 109). Contains a good general maintenance regime including how to clean, demag & lubricate the ol unit. 8)

You could scan it in two sections and paste it together.

I have the EP2, the tube model. Very cool little box. I had found Mike BAttle on the internet a few years ago and sent him mine to fix up. The motor had started making noise. I actually got him on the phone and had a chance to talk with him a while. He was a great guy. I wish his family all the best. I think his grandson kind of run things, while grandpa did his thing. Just hope his grandson picked up all the tips he could while he was around.

Re: echo=> more info!

Postby Smallbox » Sat Apr 18, 2009 12:53 pm

Hey David,
I checked out Loopmaster (for their EP tape rewinding service) and it looks good/affordable.
Loopmaster also offers a really cool (simple and polarity-adjustable) mini Tap Tempo Switch for those delay units
that feature an external jack for setting the delay to match tempo.

Thanks to the "Mix" Magazine article link you sent, I also found a couple of
other sources for EP-related info:

if your Echoplex needs its rubber rollers serviced/replaced
Rubber Roller servicing => http://www.terrysrubberrollers.com/

for those inclined towards d-i-y Tape Cartridge Rewinding
Bulk Tape Supplier => http://www.quantegy-online.com/456457.html
EDIT: Will do some questioning with knowledgeable people to verify which Tape is suitable for EP's (ie; 457? 478? etc) Thanks David for the head's up.

The Mix article I referred to will lead to other more technical info, some of which is already
referenced in this ongoing thread...(search, and search some more!)

Thanks a lot for the added info, David!!

Ray,

BTW my friends EP3 would be running in normal echo mode then switch to sound on sound all by itself.Q7& Q8 voltage dropped in half from 25 to about 12 volts when this happened.... cause, one of the .01 caps in that circuit was faulty...
