Which OT for 1972 Superlead?

Postby guitarjesus » Mon Nov 14, 2016 12:29 am

Hey guys, I'm the new kid around here. I've got a 1972 Marshall Superlead that's been in my garage for the better part of a decade with a smoked output transformer.

I need to buy a new one obviously but I can't seem to confirm which appropriate model would be period correct. I loved the amp before it blew so I want to retain the original sound as much as possible.

I know they had switched to Dagnall by 72, but were they the c1998, c2668 or a different transformer?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Jeff,

I would say the C2668 would be correct but the C1998 would work fine as there was probably some transition going on from one transformer to the next.

I believe some Drake 1201-99 were around at that time but I may be wrong.

You are right Bill but they are pretty rare.

Thank you guys.

Out of curiosity, is there any way to identify these OT from each other? There is no sticker on the end bells or printing to identify.

Have you had bell covers off? Sometimes there is a label on the coil paper.

Oops, a bit late to this but the Drakes would have had the number stamped on the end bells, wire colours were same as Dagnall

The post 70 Dagnalls I have opened have the model number printed in black ink on the clear plastic wrap around the wire bobbin cover, e.g. :

I guess Brian would know more tho'

Honestly I don't know. Amp blew a filter cap in 2004 or 05 and had crap spewed the innards of the amp. Don't know what would make the filter cap go, it was a new LCR at the time.

How do I go about testing it? I have a DMM to use for the job if that works.

If you have an ohms meter you can check for any open circuits or strange readings.
